Microderm Abrasion is sandblasting for your face. High-pressure streams of white aluminum oxide abrasive destructively shreds your skin.
I just learned about Microderm Abrasion (silly peoople call it microdermabrasion).
Oh! My! God!
What were you ladies thinking? Why on earth would you allow a teenager anywhere near your face with a wand attached to an air compressor and a jug of white aluminum oxide? Are you insane?
IT'S A SAND BLASTER!
It is used to remove paint from metal. Machine shops use it to clean the milling marks off of engine blocks. It will shred skin, flay muscle and drill holes in bone.
Someone told you it would make you beautiful.
AND YOU BELIEVED THEM?
Your skin is what protects you from being cooked to death by the sun. You know, ultra-violet rays? UVA and UVB? Strip off the dead skin cells and you turn the color of a lobster like, snap!
I can sense that you still don't get it. Well then, let's get technical.
Maybe it was the sales pitch. They said they would use "microcrystalline corundum" to gently exfoliate your face. Corundum is just another word for ruby and sapphire, after all.

Unsuspecting Woman Before Sand Blasting
Know where exfoliation came from? Geology. When a honking big slab of rock spalls off of a mountain, geologists call that exfoliation. Think of your face as a granite mountain.
Corundum is a mineral. Chemists call it aluminum oxide or Al2O3. This material has a trigonal crystal system, forming three crystal shapes: three-sided pyramids, rhombohedra and scalenohedra. The atomic separations are among the shortest of any mineral crystals. This makes corundum denser and harder than any other mineral except diamond (cubic crystal diamond).
Aluminum oxide is the perfect tool for aggressive material removal. Add compressed air and it is like sandpaper without the paper. If I handed you a sheet of sandpaper, would you rub it vigorously all over your face?
The next big thing in facials is the sterile diamond abrasion tool. Aluminum oxide wasn't good enough. They had to get harder, and it doesn't get any harder than diamond.
These new tools have diamond-studded abrasive pads (speaking of sandpaper) that vibrate at insane frequencies. They also come with hot and cold hammers to either open or close your pores.
HAMMERS!
And if that weren't enough, these machines from facial helsinke toss in ultrasound to heat up deeper tissues.
And who operates these dangerous industrial pieces of hardware? Yes, that's right - gum-chewing, texting-while-driving, cell-phone-distracted, teenage girls.
But, hey. With a diamond dermal scrubber, you don't have to worry about microcrystalline corundum grit in your eyes anymore.
